> Esperanto in numbers: 60,000 to 2 million speakers, 389,591 Wikipedia articles, 111 World Congresses, 16 rules. Each figure dated and sourced.

Esperanto has an estimated **60,000 to 2 million speakers**, depending on the definition, and about **1,000–2,000 native speakers**. The Universal Esperanto Association had **4,700 individual members** in 130 countries in 2023. The Esperanto Wikipedia had **389,591 articles** on 8 October 2026. **111 World Esperanto Congresses** have been numbered since 1905, and 108 took place. The grammar has **16 rules** and a **28-letter** alphabet.

Figures were checked on 8 October 2026 unless a row gives another date. Live counts (Wikipedia, Tatoeba, *Pasporta Servo*) change daily. "Our count" marks a figure we calculated from published data.

## How many people speak Esperanto?

| Estimate | Year | What it counts | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1,000–2,000 | 1996–2022 | Native speakers: about 1,000 (Lindstedt 1996, 2006); about 2,000 children in about 1,000 families (2004); 1,000 (*Ethnologue* 2022) | [Lindstedt 2006](https://journal.fi/finjol/article/view/153130/98645); [Corsetti, Pinto & Tolomeo 2004](https://doi.org/10.1075/lplp.28.3.04cor) |
| About 10,000 | 1996 | Fluent speakers, in Lindstedt's scale of 1,000 native, 10,000 fluent, 100,000 active, 1 million passive | [Wikipedia, Esperanto](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Esperanto#Number_of_speakers) |
| About 20,000 | 2003 | Members of Esperanto organisations; Ziko van Dijk doubted that fifty times as many unorganised speakers exist | [Wikipedia, Esperanto](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Esperanto#Number_of_speakers) |
| About 63,000 (30,000–180,000) | 2017 | People who would say "yes" in a census, estimated by Svend Vendelbo Nielsen from census, membership and website data | [Libera Folio, 13 Feb 2017](https://www.liberafolio.org/2017/02/13/nova-takso-60-000-parolas-esperanton/) |
| About 100,000 (30,000–300,000) | 2006 | People who can really speak it (Jouko Lindstedt) | [Lindstedt 2006](https://journal.fi/finjol/article/view/153130/98645) |
| 1–2 million | 1958–1989 | People with "professional" proficiency, from Sidney Culbert's sample surveys; rounded to 2 million from 1988 | [Culbert, letter of 24 Oct 1989](https://web.archive.org/web/20101120200544/http://www.panix.com/~dwolff/docs/culbert-methods.html) |
| About 1.92 million | 2015 | Esperanto users among internet users, scaled up by Amri Wandel from 320,000 Facebook users at the end of 2014 | [Wandel 2015](https://doi.org/10.7906/indecs.13.2.9) |

The lowest and highest figures differ about thirty-fold, mostly because they define "speaker" differently. Methods and criticism are on [how many people speak Esperanto](https://esperantopedia.org/about/speakers/); families and linguistic findings are on [native speakers](https://esperantopedia.org/about/native-speakers/).

## How big is the organised movement?

| *Pasporta Servo* hosts | More than 2,400 in 121 countries and 1,801 cities | 8 Oct 2026 | [pasportaservo.org](https://www.pasportaservo.org/) |

Membership is a floor, not a total: many speakers join only a national association or none. Hungary's rise reflects state language exams that accepted Esperanto. See [where Esperanto is spoken](https://esperantopedia.org/about/countries/) and the [organisations](https://esperantopedia.org/about/organizations/).

| Official prefixes | 10 (nine from the *Fundamento*; *mis-* since 1929) | [PMEG](https://bertilow.com/pmeg/vortfarado/afiksoj/prefiksoj/index.html) |
| Official suffixes | 31 (28 from the *Fundamento*; *-aĉ-* 1909, *-ism-* 1919, *-end-* 1953), plus 6 participle suffixes | [PMEG](https://bertilow.com/pmeg/vortfarado/afiksoj/sufiksoj/index.html) |
| Fundamental elements | 2,768 | [Akademia Vortaro](https://www.akademio-de-esperanto.org/akademia_vortaro/klarigoj.html) |

Our [list of official roots](/dictionary/oficialaj-radikoj/) counts in another unit – one root per entry marked as official in the ReVo dictionary – and has 5,328, so it differs slightly from the Academy's elements. The official list is a core, not the whole vocabulary, because most words are built from roots and affixes. See the [grammar cheat sheet](https://esperantopedia.org/grammar/cheat-sheet/) and the [Academy](https://esperantopedia.org/about/academy/).

## Organisations in numbers

| Organisation | Founded | Figure | Source |
|---|---|---|---|

## How many books exist in Esperanto?

No reliable count exists. The Department of Planned Languages of the Austrian National Library, the largest specialist library for interlinguistics, holds about 45,000 printed volumes on about 500 planned languages, Esperanto among them (archived 18 June 2025), so it is a holding, not a title count. Published title estimates range widely; see [Esperanto literature](https://esperantopedia.org/about/literature/).

## Key dates

| Date | Event | Source |
|---|---|---|

Two dates repeat every year: 26 July is Esperanto Day and 15 December is [Zamenhof Day](https://esperantopedia.org/about/zamenhof-day/). For the story behind them, see the [history of Esperanto](https://esperantopedia.org/about/history/).

## Common questions

### How many people speak Esperanto?

Estimates run from about 60,000 (Nielsen, 2017: 63,000, margin 30,000–180,000) to about 2 million (Culbert, rounded in 1988; Wandel, 2015). No census counts Esperanto worldwide, so the answer depends on how "speaker" is defined.

### How many native speakers of Esperanto are there?

About 1,000–2,000. Lindstedt gave 1,000 (2006), Corsetti, Pinto and Tolomeo cited about 2,000 children in about 1,000 families (2004), and *Ethnologue* lists 1,000 (2022).

### How many articles does the Esperanto Wikipedia have?

389,591 on 8 October 2026. That is 38th among about 350 language editions and the largest Wikipedia in a constructed language.

### How many World Esperanto Congresses have there been?

111 have been numbered up to Graz 2026, and 108 took place. The record is 5,946 participants in Warsaw in 1987. The 112th is planned for Melbourne on 3–10 July 2027.

### How many official words does Esperanto have?

The Academy counts 4,953 official elements up to 2007, of which 2,768 are Fundamental. The 10th Addition of 2023 added 420 roots, so about 5,373 in all by our sum. Many more words are built from these roots.
