> Esperanto verbs for a whole day, from vekiĝi to enlitiĝi: washing, dressing, meals, work and sleep, with pronunciation, sin vs -iĝ- and a sample day.

A day in Esperanto starts with ***vekiĝi*** "to wake up" and ends with ***enlitiĝi*** "to go to bed". In between you wash (*lavi sin*), get dressed (*vestiĝi*), eat (*matenmanĝi, tagmanĝi, vespermanĝi*) and work (*labori*). Most morning and evening verbs follow one of two patterns: the reflexive [*sin*](https://esperantopedia.org/grammar/pronouns/) for what you do to yourself, or the suffix [*-iĝ-*](https://esperantopedia.org/grammar/transitivity/) for a change that happens to you. Pronunciation guides split words into syllables, with the stressed syllable in capitals.

## Morning: waking up, washing, dressing

| English | Esperanto | Pronunciation | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| to wake up | *vekiĝi* | ve-KI-ĝi | No object; ReVo: *ntr* |
| to wake someone | *veki* | VE-ki | Needs an object; ReVo: *tr* |
| alarm clock | *vekhorloĝo* | vek-hor-LO-ĝo | *veki* + *horloĝo* "clock" |
| to get out of bed | *ellitiĝi* | el-li-TI-ĝi | *el lito* "out of bed" + *-iĝi* |
| to get up, rise | *leviĝi* | le-VI-ĝi | Also "to stand up", "to rise" |
| to take a shower | *duŝi sin*, *duŝiĝi* | DU-ŝi sin, du-ŜI-ĝi | Both in ReVo |
| to take a bath | *bani sin*, *baniĝi* | BA-ni sin, ba-NI-ĝi | Both in ReVo |
| to wash (yourself) | *lavi sin* | LA-vi sin | *Mi lavas min.* "I wash myself." |
| to wash your hands | *lavi al si la manojn* | LA-vi al si la MA-nojn | Also *lavi siajn manojn* |
| to wash your face | *lavi la vizaĝon* | LA-vi la vi-ZA-ĝon | ReVo quotes *li lavis sian vizaĝon* |
| to shave | *razi sin* | RA-zi sin | *razi* "to cut hair close to the skin" |
| to comb your hair | *kombi sin*, *kombi la harojn* | KOM-bi sin, KOM-bi la HA-rojn | ReVo: *sin kombi* |
| to brush your teeth | *brosi la dentojn* | BRO-si la DEN-tojn | *dentobroso* or *dentbroso* "toothbrush" |
| to get dressed | *vestiĝi*, *vesti sin* | ves-TI-ĝi, VES-ti sin | See the note below |
| to have breakfast | *matenmanĝi* | ma-ten-MAN-ĝi | Noun: *matenmanĝo* |

**Veki or vekiĝi?** *Veki* wakes somebody else, *vekiĝi* is what happens to you: *La vekhorloĝo vekas min, kaj mi vekiĝas.* – "The alarm clock wakes me, and I wake up." A bare *Mi vekis je la sesa* is wrong; see [-ig- and -iĝ-](https://esperantopedia.org/grammar/transitivity/).

**Duŝi sin or duŝiĝi?** ReVo gives both in one entry, "duŝiĝi, sin duŝi", as "to wash oneself with a shower". It does not prefer one, and PMEG does not mention them, so use either. The same goes for *bani sin* and *baniĝi*.

**Vestiĝi** is the regular *-iĝ-* form of *vesti* "to clothe" (ESPDIC lists it). Do not look for it in ReVo: the entry *vestiĝo* there is a different word meaning "vestige". More clothing words are on the [clothes](https://esperantopedia.org/phrases/clothes/) page.

## During the day

| English | Esperanto | Pronunciation | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| to go to work | *iri al la laboro*, *iri al la laborejo* | I-ri al la la-BO-ro, I-ri al la la-bo-RE-jo | *laboro* "work", *laborejo* "workplace" |
| to go to school | *iri al la lernejo* | I-ri al la ler-NE-jo | *lerni* + *-ej-* |
| to set off | *ekiri* | e-KI-ri | *Mi ekiras je la oka.* |
| to travel by bus | *veturi per buso* | ve-TU-ri per BU-so | Or *bicikli* "to cycle" |
| to work | *labori* | la-BO-ri | ReVo: *ntr* |
| to learn | *lerni* | LER-ni | New skills or facts |
| to study | *studi* | STU-di | A subject |
| to take a break | *paŭzi* | PAŬ-zi | Noun: *paŭzo* |
| to have lunch | *tagmanĝi* | tag-MAN-ĝi | Noun: *tagmanĝo* |
| to buy | *aĉeti* | a-ĈE-ti | *Mi aĉetas panon.* |
| to cook | *kuiri* | ku-I-ri | More in [cooking](https://esperantopedia.org/phrases/kitchen-cooking/) |
| to clean | *purigi* | pu-RI-gi | From *pura* "clean" |
| to wash the dishes | *lavi la vazaron* | LA-vi la va-ZA-ron | ReVo: *vazaro* "dishes"; *lavi la telerojn* "the plates" |
| to wash clothes | *lavi vestojn* | LA-vi VES-tojn | Laundry: *lavotaĵo* |
| to phone | *telefoni* | te-le-FO-ni | *telefoni al iu* |

*Tagmanĝi* and the other meal verbs are marked *tr* in ReVo, so the food may be an object: *Mi tagmanĝis supon.* – "I had soup for lunch." Rooms, furniture and appliances are on the [house and home](https://esperantopedia.org/phrases/house-home/) page.

## Evening and night

| English | Esperanto | Pronunciation | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| to come home | *reveni hejmen* | re-VE-ni HEJ-men | *hejmen* "(to) home" |
| to have dinner | *vespermanĝi* | ves-per-MAN-ĝi | Noun: *vespermanĝo* |
| to watch TV | *rigardi televidon*, *spekti televidon*, *televidi* | ri-GAR-di te-le-VI-don, SPEK-ti te-le-VI-don, te-le-VI-di | ReVo: *televidi* = *spekti televidon* |
| to read | *legi* | LE-gi | *legi libron* "read a book" |
| to rest | *ripozi* | ri-PO-zi | ReVo: *ntr* |
| to get undressed | *senvestiĝi* | sen-ves-TI-ĝi | Opposite of *vestiĝi* |
| to go to bed | *enlitiĝi* | en-li-TI-ĝi | *en lito* "into bed" + *-iĝi* |
| to lie down | *kuŝiĝi* | ku-ŜI-ĝi | Not necessarily in bed |
| to sleep | *dormi* | DOR-mi | The state of being asleep |
| to fall asleep | *ekdormi*, *endormiĝi* | ek-DOR-mi, en-dor-MI-ĝi | See below |

Three verbs cover sleep, and a few more fill the gaps.

| Verb | Meaning | Example |
|---|---|---|
| *dormi* | to be asleep | *La infanoj jam dormas.* – "The children are already asleep." |
| *ekdormi* | to start sleeping, often suddenly | *Mi legis kaj baldaŭ ekdormis.* – "I was reading and soon fell asleep." |
| *endormiĝi* | to pass into sleep | *Mi tuj endormiĝis.* – "I fell asleep at once." |
| *dormeti* | to doze | *Post la tagmanĝo li dormetis.* – "After lunch he dozed." |
| *maldormi* | to be awake | *Mi maldormis la tutan nokton.* – "I was awake all night." |

PMEG glosses *ekdormi* as "begin to sleep, fall asleep"; the prefix *ek-* adds a sudden start ([prefixes](https://esperantopedia.org/grammar/prefixes/)). ReVo defines *endormiĝi* as passing into a sleeping state, so the two are very close. *Enlitiĝi* only means getting into bed. For a goodnight wish see [greetings](https://esperantopedia.org/phrases/greetings/).

## How often and when

| English | Esperanto | Pronunciation | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| every day | *ĉiutage* | ĉi-u-TA-ge | |
| every morning | *ĉiumatene* | ĉi-u-ma-TE-ne | *ĉiuvespere* "every evening" |
| always | *ĉiam* | ĈI-am | |
| usually | *kutime* | ku-TI-me | From *kutima* "habitual" |
| often / rarely | *ofte / malofte* | OF-te / mal-OF-te | |
| sometimes | *iafoje*, *kelkfoje*, *fojfoje* | i-a-FO-je, kelk-FO-je, foj-FO-je | *Foje* alone is ambiguous in ReVo |
| never | *neniam* | ne-NI-am | No extra *ne* |
| at seven o'clock | *je la sepa* | je la SE-pa | *Je* before clock times |
| first / then / finally | *unue / poste / fine* | u-NU-e / POS-te / FI-ne | To order a story |

Examples: *Mi ĉiam matenmanĝas je la sepa.* – "I always have breakfast at seven." *Li kutime legas vespere.* – "He usually reads in the evening." *Ŝi neniam laboras dimanĉe.* – "She never works on Sundays." For the clock, dates and more frequency words see [time and dates](https://esperantopedia.org/phrases/time/).

## Sin and -iĝ-: acting on yourself

Esperanto has two tools for "I do it to myself". The first is the reflexive pronoun *sin*, which stands for the subject when the subject is *li*, *ŝi*, *ĝi*, *ili* or a name. For *mi*, *ni* and *vi* you repeat the same pronoun ([pronouns](https://esperantopedia.org/grammar/pronouns/)).

| Sentence | Meaning |
|---|---|
| *Mi lavas min.* | I wash myself. |
| *Li lavas sin.* | He washes himself. |
| *Li lavas lin.* | He washes another man. |
| *Ili vestas sin.* | They get dressed. |

*Sin* is never the subject: *Si lavas* is wrong (PMEG). With a body part, PMEG treats *Mi lavas al mi la manojn* and *Mi lavas miajn manojn* as equal; *al mi* tells whose hands they are.

The second tool is the suffix *-iĝ-*, which turns a verb into one with no object ([-ig- and -iĝ-](https://esperantopedia.org/grammar/transitivity/)). It makes *vekiĝi* from *veki*, *vestiĝi* from *vesti* and *duŝiĝi* from *duŝi*. From a place expression it makes *ellitiĝi* ("out of bed") and *enlitiĝi* ("into bed") (PMEG). For washing and dressing the two ways are close in meaning; PMEG notes that an *-iĝ-* verb presents the action as happening more or less by itself. Possessives follow the same rule: *sia* means the subject's own (*Li lavas sian vizaĝon.*), *lia* someone else's.

## A day told in present and past

Verbs do not change for person: *mi, li, ili lavas*. The present ends in *-as*; the past replaces it with *-is* ([verbs](https://esperantopedia.org/grammar/verbs/)). Everything else stays the same.

| Present (*-as*) | Past (*-is*) | English (present / past) |
|---|---|---|
| *Mi vekiĝas je la sesa kaj duono.* | *Mi vekiĝis je la sesa kaj duono.* | I wake up / woke up at half past six. |
| *Mi ellitiĝas kaj duŝas min.* | *Mi ellitiĝis kaj duŝis min.* | I get / got out of bed and take / took a shower. |
| *Mi brosas la dentojn kaj vestas min.* | *Mi brosis la dentojn kaj vestis min.* | I brush / brushed my teeth and get / got dressed. |
| *Je la sepa mi matenmanĝas: mi manĝas panon kaj trinkas kafon.* | *Je la sepa mi matenmanĝis: mi manĝis panon kaj trinkis kafon.* | At seven I have / had breakfast: bread and coffee. |
| *Je la oka mi veturas per buso al la laborejo.* | *Je la oka mi veturis per buso al la laborejo.* | At eight I go / went to work by bus. |
| *Tagmeze mi tagmanĝas kun miaj kolegoj.* | *Tagmeze mi tagmanĝis kun miaj kolegoj.* | At noon I have / had lunch with my colleagues. |
| *Vespere mi revenas hejmen kaj kuiras vespermanĝon.* | *Vespere mi revenis hejmen kaj kuiris vespermanĝon.* | In the evening I come / came home and cook / cooked dinner. |
| *Poste mi legas libron aŭ rigardas televidon.* | *Poste mi legis libron aŭ rigardis televidon.* | Afterwards I read a book or watch / watched TV. |
| *Je la deka mi enlitiĝas kaj baldaŭ endormiĝas.* | *Je la deka mi enlitiĝis kaj baldaŭ endormiĝis.* | At ten I go / went to bed and soon fall / fell asleep. |

For tomorrow, use *-os*: *Morgaŭ mi vekiĝos je la sesa.* – "Tomorrow I will wake up at six." Body words for the shower and the toothbrush are on the [body and health](https://esperantopedia.org/phrases/body-health/) page.

## Common questions

### How do you say "I wake up at seven" in Esperanto?
*Mi vekiĝas je la sepa.* Use *vekiĝi*, not *veki*, because you are not waking anyone else. With an alarm clock: *La vekhorloĝo vekas min je la sepa.*

### How do you say "to take a shower" in Esperanto?
*Duŝi sin* or *duŝiĝi*; ReVo lists both and prefers neither. *Mi duŝas min ĉiumatene.* – "I take a shower every morning."

### What is the difference between ellitiĝi and leviĝi?
*Ellitiĝi* is specific: you leave the bed (ReVo). *Leviĝi* is broader: it also means to rise (*La suno leviĝas.*) and to stand up from a chair, and is common for getting up in the morning.

### What is the difference between dormi, ekdormi and endormiĝi?
*Dormi* is being asleep. *Ekdormi* and *endormiĝi* both mean falling asleep; *ek-* stresses the sudden start. *Enlitiĝi* is only going to bed.
