## Why do Esperanto wishes end in -n?

Each wish is the end of a sentence whose start is dropped: *(Mi deziras al vi) feliĉan naskiĝtagon!* – "(I wish you) a happy birthday". The thing wished is the object, so it takes the [accusative *-n*](https://esperantopedia.org/grammar/accusative/), and the adjective agrees: *feliĉa* becomes *feliĉan*. PMEG says this *-n* has become the customary way to build such traditional expressions, and ReVo gives *gratulon!* as a set expression for congratulating. For several things add *-j*: *Gratulojn!*, *Bonajn feriojn!* "Have a nice holiday!" The full sentence is fine too: *Mi deziras al vi feliĉan Kristnaskon.*

## Birthday and name day

Add a name after a comma: *Feliĉan naskiĝtagon, Anna!* Other options are *Ĝojan naskiĝtagon!*, *Gratulon pro via naskiĝtago!* and the more formal *Ĉion bonan okaze de via naskiĝtago!* "All the best on your birthday". *Naskiĝtago* is Zamenhof's word; ReVo notes that some speakers say *datreveno* alone, but *naskiĝtago* is understood more widely.

**Song.** Vikipedio gives several singable versions of the "Happy Birthday to You" tune. The article is titled after the first line, *Bondezirojn al vi* "best wishes to you"; other versions begin *Ni gratulas al vi* and *Ĉion bonan al vi*.

**Name day.** The *nomtago* is the feast day of the saint whose name you bear, kept in Catholic regions such as Poland and Bavaria. The wish can follow the same pattern – *Feliĉan nomtagon!* – although we found no fixed formula for it in dictionaries or Tatoeba.

## Christmas, New Year and other festivals

- **Christmas.** Vikipedio calls *Gajan Kristnaskon kaj feliĉan novan jaron!* the traditional card greeting. *Gaja* means cheerful, *feliĉa* happy or fortunate; both are common. PMEG treats festival names as proper names (*Kristnasko*, *Pasko*) and advises capitals, although lower case is sometimes seen.
- **New Year.** *Feliĉan Novjaron!*, *Feliĉan novan jaron!* and *Ĝojan novan jaron!* occur in the Tatoeba corpus, and *bonan novjaron* in the longer *Mi deziras al vi bonan novjaron.*
- **Easter.** *Feliĉan Paskon!* or *Ĝojan Paskon!* ReVo gives *Pasko* both meanings, Easter and Passover, so context decides.
- **Other festivals.** *Ĝojan feston!* is PMEG's own example of a festive wish; *Feliĉajn festotagojn!* is "Happy holidays". Tatoeba also has *Gajan Noŭruzon!* for Nowruz. For Hanukkah, Tatoeba has *Feliĉan Ĥanukon!*, built on the same pattern. For Ramadan (*ramadano* in ReVo), Tatoeba has *Bonan Ramadanon!* on the same pattern; there is no fixed formula, so *Ĝojan feston!* is also a safe choice.
- **Zamenhof Day.** *Feliĉan Zamenhofan Tagon!* on 15 December; *Feliĉan Zamenhof-tagon!* also occurs. See [Zamenhof Day](https://esperantopedia.org/about/zamenhof-day/).

For anniversaries and Valentine's Day see [I love you](https://esperantopedia.org/phrases/i-love-you/); for dates such as *la 25-a de Decembro*, see [days and months](https://esperantopedia.org/phrases/days-months/).

## Congratulations, luck and health

- **Congratulations.** *Gratulon!* and *Gratulojn!* are both normal; ReVo says the plural is not rare but not required. *Gratulegon!* is heartier. Give the reason with *pro* or *okaze de*: *Gratulon pro via sukceso!* "Congratulations on your success!"; at weddings *Gratulon pro la geedziĝo!*
- **Good luck.** *Bonŝancon!* is "good luck" (*bonŝanco* is one word; *ŝanco* alone is "chance"). *Sukceson!* literally means "success" and suits exams: *Sukceson en la ekzameno!* *Ĉion bonan!* is "all the best".
- **Cheers.** *Sanon!* or *Je via sano!* To make a toast, use the verb *tosti*: *Ni trinku je via sano!* "Let's drink to your health!" *Sanon!* is also said after a sneeze.
- **Get well.** *Resaniĝu baldaŭ!* "Get well soon!" or the noun wish *Baldaŭan resaniĝon!*
- **Condolences.** Keep it plain: *Kondolencon.*, *Sincerajn kondolencojn.* or *Bonvolu akcepti mian plej koran kondolencon.* (ReVo).

## How to write a card in Esperanto

| Esperanto | English |
|---|---|
| *Kara Maria!* | Dear Maria, |
| *Feliĉan naskiĝtagon! Mi deziras al vi sanon, ĝojon kaj multajn feliĉajn jarojn.* | Happy birthday! I wish you health, joy and many happy years. |
| *Amike, Petro* | Yours, Peter |

A greeting usually ends in an exclamation mark or a comma. According to David Jordan's guide, the closing is simply *Salutas* or *Elkore salutas* followed by your name. Friendly options are *Kore* "cordially", *Amike* "in friendship" and *Kun amikaj salutoj* "with friendly greetings". The English-style *Kun plej bonaj deziroj* "with best wishes" is sometimes used and understood. For a formal card start with *Estimata sinjoro…* (see [greetings](https://esperantopedia.org/phrases/greetings/)). More everyday expressions are in [basic phrases](https://esperantopedia.org/phrases/basic/); look up any word in the [dictionary](https://esperantopedia.org/dictionary/).

## Common questions

### How do you say happy birthday in Esperanto?

*Feliĉan naskiĝtagon!* (fe-LI-ĉan nas-kiĝ-TA-gon). You can also say *Ĝojan naskiĝtagon!* or *Gratulon pro via naskiĝtago!*

### How do you say Merry Christmas in Esperanto?

*Feliĉan Kristnaskon!* or *Gajan Kristnaskon!* To add the New Year: *Gajan Kristnaskon kaj feliĉan novan jaron!*

### How do you say happy New Year in Esperanto?

*Feliĉan Novjaron!* or *Feliĉan novan jaron!* *Bonan Novjaron!* "A good New Year!" is also used.

### Why is it Feliĉan and not Feliĉa?

The wish is the object of an unspoken "I wish you…", so the noun and its adjective both take the accusative *-n*. *Feliĉa* alone would only be a plain adjective.

### How do you say cheers in Esperanto?

*Sanon!* or *Je via sano!* – "To your health!"

### How do you say congratulations in Esperanto?

*Gratulon!* or *Gratulojn!* Add the reason with *pro*: *Gratulon pro via sukceso!*
