World Esperanto Congress: from 1905 to Melbourne 2027

For one week a year, a city becomes the capital of Esperanto – the World Congress has met almost every summer since 1905.

Updated: 4 min read

The World Esperanto Congress (Universala Kongreso de Esperanto, UK) is the largest annual meeting of Esperanto speakers. It has been held almost every year since the first congress in Boulogne-sur-Mer, France, in August 1905, organised since 1933–34 by the Universal Esperanto Association. Up to and including Graz 2026, 111 congresses have been numbered, of which 108 actually took place. The largest was Warsaw 1987 with 5,946 registered participants; recent congresses draw about 850–1,300. The next are planned for Melbourne (2027) and Kaunas (2028).

Everything at the congress – lectures, debates, theatre, concerts, excursions – happens in Esperanto, without interpreters.

What happens at a World Esperanto Congress?

A typical congress lasts eight days, usually in late July or early August. Regular parts of the programme:

  • Opening ceremony (Inaŭguro), with greetings from speakers of each country, and a formal closing (Solena Fermo).
  • International Congress University (Internacia Kongresa Universitato), a series of academic lectures; its first lectures were given in Geneva in 1925, and it has run every year since 1951.
  • Arts competitions of the UEA (Belartaj Konkursoj) for poetry, prose, drama and music, with results announced at the congress.
  • Meetings of the UEA's committee and of specialist associations – for doctors, teachers, railway workers, Catholics, scientists and many others.
  • A children's congress (Internacia Infana Kongreseto) for the children of participants.
  • Concerts, a national evening presenting the host country, an international evening, and a mid-week excursion day.

Young people have their own International Youth Congress (Internacia Junulara Kongreso, IJK), run by the youth organisation TEJO and first held in 1938.

Which congresses were cancelled?

Three numbered congresses never took place:

  • 1914, Paris (10th) – cancelled when the First World War broke out; 3,739 people had registered, a record at the time.
  • 2020, Montreal (105th) and 2021, Belfast (106th) – cancelled because of the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2020 an online Virtual Congress with about 2,000 registered participants was held as a tribute; in 2021 the second Virtual Congress, with about 1,850, took the place of the Belfast congress. Montreal hosted the 107th congress in 2022 instead.

There were no congresses in 1916–1919 or 1940–1946 because of the world wars. In 1967 the congress planned for Tel Aviv moved to Rotterdam because of the tension that led to the Six-Day War.

Which congresses made history?

  • Boulogne-sur-Mer 1905 adopted the Declaration of Boulogne, which made the Fundamento de Esperanto the untouchable basis of the language, and the green flag – see the history of Esperanto and flag and symbols.
  • Prague 1921 saw the founding of SAT, the workers' Esperanto association, and was attended by a League of Nations delegate.
  • Warsaw 1987 celebrated the centenary of Esperanto in Zamenhof's city with the largest attendance ever.
  • Prague 1996 adopted the Prague Manifesto, a statement of the movement's seven principles.
  • Białystok 2009 met in Zamenhof's birthplace for the 150th anniversary of his birth.
  • Lille 2015 was the 100th congress.
  • Arusha 2024 was the first congress in Africa.

When and where is the next World Esperanto Congress?

The 112th World Esperanto Congress is planned for Melbourne, Australia, on 3–10 July 2027 – only the second congress in Oceania after Adelaide 1997. The 113th is planned for Kaunas, Lithuania, in 2028; Kaunas was the birthplace of Zamenhof's wife, Klara. Check the UEA's congress pages for registration details.
