“What is this?” in Esperanto is Kio estas ĉi tio? (KEE-oh EHS-tahs chee TEE-oh). Kio is “what”, tio is “that”, and the little word ĉi brings it close: ĉi tio or tio ĉi is “this”. Without ĉi, Kio estas tio? is “What is that?”.
