Grammar
Esperanto comparatives and superlatives: pli, plej, ol
Pli, plej and ol replace the English "-er", "-est" and "than", and no comparison is irregular.
Esperanto compares with separate little words, not with endings. Pli means "more", plej "most", malpli "less", malplej "least", ol "than" and kiel "as". So "bigger than" is pli granda ol and "the biggest" is la plej granda. Nothing changes inside the adjective, and no form is irregular: "better" is pli bona and "best" is la plej bona.
The patterns at a glance
| Meaning | Pattern | Example | Translation |
|---|---|---|---|
| more … than | pli … ol | La elefanto estas pli granda ol la muso. | "The elephant is bigger than the mouse." |
| less … than | malpli … ol | Tiu libro estas malpli malfacila ol ĉi tiu. | "That book is less difficult than this one." |
| the most | la plej … el | Ŝi estas la plej saĝa el miaj amikoj. | "She is the wisest of my friends." |
| as … as | tiel … kiel | Mi estas tiel alta kiel mia patro. | "I am as tall as my father." |
| the more …, the more | ju pli …, des pli … | Ju pli frue, des pli bone. | "The sooner, the better." |
Comparative: pli … ol
Put pli right before the adjective or adverb and ol before what you compare with. Pli never changes, but the adjective keeps its usual -j and -n (nouns and adjectives). English has bigger but more beautiful; Esperanto uses pli every time, whatever the length of the word.
| Base word | Comparative | Superlative |
|---|---|---|
| bona "good" | pli bona "better" | la plej bona "the best" |
| malbona "bad" | pli malbona "worse" | la plej malbona "the worst" |
| granda "big" | pli granda "bigger" | la plej granda "the biggest" |
| bone "well" | pli bone "better" | plej bone "best" |
| rapide "quickly" | pli rapide "faster" | plej rapide "fastest" |
- Mia frato estas pli juna ol mi. – "My brother is younger than I am."
- Mi vidis pli grandajn domojn. – "I saw bigger houses."
- Ŝi kantas pli bone ol mi. – "She sings better than I do." Adverbs compare in the same way (adverbs).
What follows ol
After ol, a word takes the form it would have in the full sentence (PMEG). A subject has no ending, an object takes -n (the accusative). To test, finish the sentence in your head.
| Sentence | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Mi amas vin pli ol li. | "I love you more than he does." (ol li amas vin) |
| Mi amas vin pli ol lin. | "I love you more than I love him." (ol mi amas lin) |
| Mi ŝatas kafon pli ol teon. | "I like coffee more than tea." |
Before a number, pli ol and malpli ol mean "more than" and "less than", and the noun takes the ending the whole phrase needs: Mi havas pli ol dek librojn. – "I have more than ten books."
Superlative: la plej … el
Plej goes before the adjective, usually with la, because a superlative normally points to one unique thing. The group it belongs to follows el – "of, out of". Place words such as en work too.
- Ŝi estas la plej saĝa el miaj amikoj. – "She is the wisest of my friends."
- Ŝi kuras plej rapide. – "She runs fastest." (no la with an adverb)
- Tio estas la dua plej alta turo en la urbo. – "That is the second-highest tower in the city."
For exactly two things, la pli is the natural choice, and el la du can be dropped: Li estas la pli juna el la du fratoj. – "He is the younger of the two brothers."
Less and least: malpli, malplej
Malpli and malplej are pli and plej turned round by mal-: Teo estas malpli forta ol kafo. – "Tea is less strong than coffee." But malpli and pli mal- are not always interchangeable. PMEG's pair: Li estas malpli bela ol vi – "He is less handsome than you" – is a compliment to you, while Li estas pli malbela ol vi – "He is uglier than you" – is an insult to him.
Equal comparisons: tiel … kiel, same … kiel
| Pattern | Example | Translation |
|---|---|---|
| tiel … kiel – as … as | Mia fratino estas tiel forta kiel mi. | "My sister is as strong as I am." |
| ne tiel … kiel – not as … as | Teo ne estas tiel forta kiel kafo. | "Tea is not as strong as coffee." |
| same … kiel – just as … as | Ŝi parolas same bone kiel mi. | "She speaks just as well as I do." |
| sama … kiel – the same … as | Mi aĉetis la saman libron kiel vi. | "I bought the same book as you." |
| tiom da … kiom – as much, as many | Ni havas tiom da tempo, kiom ni bezonas. | "We have as much time as we need." |
Tiel is often dropped before kiel: Ŝi kantas kiel birdo. – "She sings like a bird." Zamenhof wrote tiel same kiel; today the shorter same kiel is normal, and samkiel is an accepted short form (PMEG). Tiel and kiel show degree; tiom and kiom show amount. A word after kiel follows the same role rule as after ol.
Comparing amounts: pli da, malpli da
For "more of something", link the thing counted with da (prepositions). The noun after da takes no -n, even as an object; a plural keeps its -j.
- Mi volas pli da kafo. – "I want more coffee."
- Mi havas pli da libroj ol vi. – "I have more books than you."
- Ŝi havas malpli da tempo ol mi. – "She has less time than I do."
Pli da libroj compares amounts. Pli ol dek libroj compares with a number.
Stronger and weaker
| Word | Meaning | Example | Translation |
|---|---|---|---|
| multe pli | much more | Ŝi estas multe pli alta ol mi. | "She is much taller than I am." |
| ankoraŭ pli, eĉ pli | even more | Hodiaŭ estas ankoraŭ pli varme. | "Today it is even warmer." |
| tre | very | tre granda | "very big" |
| tro | too | tro granda | "too big" |
Strengthen pli with multe, not tre: multe pli granda (PMEG). Plej never means "very"; that is tre.
The suffix -eg- makes the meaning bigger inside the word: varma – "warm" → varmega – "very hot", bona → bonega – "excellent", bone → bonege. It is not a comparative: bonega does not mean "better".
How much more: differences and multiples
A measure of difference takes -n: Mia fratino estas tri jarojn pli aĝa ol mi. – "My sister is three years older than I am." For multiples use fojojn: Ĝi estas dek fojojn pli rapida ol la malnova. – "It is ten times faster than the old one."
The more … the more: ju … des
Ju opens the first part and des the second, each with pli or malpli (conjunctions).
- Ju pli mi lernas, des pli mi ŝatas la lingvon. – "The more I learn, the more I like the language."
- Ju pli mi pensas pri tio, des malpli mi komprenas. – "The more I think about it, the less I understand."
As … as possible: kiel eble plej
Kiel eble plej asks for the highest degree that is possible: Venu kiel eble plej baldaŭ. – "Come as soon as possible." The one-word form plejeble also exists. The gentler kiom eble means "as far as possible": Mi kiom eble evitas sukeron. – "I avoid sugar as far as I can."
Common mistakes
| Wrong | Right | Why |
|---|---|---|
| bonpli, bona pli | pli bona | Pli is a separate word before the adjective. |
| pli bona kiel mi, pli bona ke mi | pli bona ol mi | "Than" is ol; kiel is for equality. |
| Petro estas pli alta ol min. | Petro estas pli alta ol mi. | After ol the word has its role in the full sentence: a subject, so no -n. |
| Mi ŝatas kafon pli ol teo. | Mi ŝatas kafon pli ol teon. | The compared object keeps -n. |
| tre pli granda | multe pli granda | Tre does not strengthen pli. |
| Mi havas pli da librojn. | Mi havas pli da libroj. | No -n after da. |
