What time is it in Esperanto? Telling time and dates
Hours are ordinal numbers, so telling time takes one question word, je for the clock and -n for the date.
To ask the time in Esperanto, say Kioma horo estas? – "What time is it?" The answer is la plus an ordinal number: Estas la tria. – "It's three o'clock." Minutes follow with kaj "and", or you count from the nearest hour with post "after" and antaŭ "before". "At three" is je la tria. Pronunciation guides split words into syllables, with the stressed syllable in capitals.
Asking and telling the time
| Esperanto | English |
|---|---|
| Kioma horo estas? | What time is it? |
| Estas la tria. | It's three o'clock. |
| Estas la tria horo kaj dek minutoj. | It's ten past three (full form). |
| Estas la tria kaj dek. | It's ten past three (usual form). |
| Je kioma horo vi vekiĝas? – Je la sesa. | At what time do you wake up? – At six. |
Hours are ordinal numbers (tria "third", oka "eighth"), so the question word is kioma: kiom "how many" plus the adjective ending -a, one of the correlatives. The words horo "hour" and minutoj "minutes" are usually dropped. ReVo explains the logic: each hour is named by the moment it begins, so 3:20 is still "the third (hour)" plus twenty minutes.
Minutes: kaj, post and antaŭ
| Time | With kaj | With post / antaŭ |
|---|---|---|
| 3:10 | la tria kaj dek | dek post la tria |
| 3:15 | la tria kaj dek kvin, la tria kaj kvarono | kvarono post la tria |
| 3:30 | la tria kaj tridek, la tria kaj duono | duono post la tria |
| 3:45 | la tria kaj kvardek kvin | kvarono antaŭ la kvara |
| 3:50 | la tria kaj kvindek | dek antaŭ la kvara |
Use kvarono "quarter" for 15 minutes and duono "half" for 30; there is no special word for 20 minutes (PMEG). Always post and antaŭ, never de. Speakers of German or Dutch must watch out: halb neun and half negen mean 8:30, but PMEG says not to use duono de la naŭa. Say la oka kaj duono or duono antaŭ la naŭa for 8:30; duono post la naŭa is 9:30.
24-hour clock and a.m./p.m.
| Time | Esperanto |
|---|---|
| 12:00 | tagmezo, la dek-dua |
| 15:15 | la dek-kvina kaj dek kvin, la tria kaj dek kvin posttagmeze |
| 21:45 | la dudek-unua kaj kvardek kvin, dek kvin antaŭ la dudek-dua |
| 00:00 | noktomezo, la nula horo |
In the 12-hour system add antaŭtagmeze (atm.) or posttagmeze (ptm.), or a part of the day: la oka vespere. In writing, a time in figures needs no la, but you say it: je 19:30 is read je la dek-naŭa kaj tridek.
Parts of the day
| English | Esperanto | Pronunciation | "in the …" |
|---|---|---|---|
| morning | mateno | ma-TE-no | matene |
| forenoon | antaŭtagmezo | an-taŭ-tag-ME-zo | antaŭtagmeze |
| noon | tagmezo | tag-ME-zo | tagmeze |
| afternoon | posttagmezo | post-tag-ME-zo | posttagmeze |
| evening | vespero | ves-PE-ro | vespere |
| night | nokto | NOK-to | nokte |
| midnight | noktomezo | nok-to-ME-zo | – |
ReVo notes that the limits of evening and night vary by culture and place. The -e adverb means "in the …": Mi laboras matene. – "I work in the mornings." For one day put the day word first: morgaŭ matene "tomorrow morning", hieraŭ vespere "yesterday evening", ĉi-nokte "tonight". For Bonan matenon! see greetings.
Now, soon, late and ago
| English | Esperanto | Pronunciation |
|---|---|---|
| now / at once | nun / tuj | nun / tuj |
| soon | baldaŭ | BAL-daŭ |
| already / still | jam / ankoraŭ | jam / an-KO-raŭ |
| early / late | frue / malfrue | FRU-e / mal-FRU-e |
Pardonu, ke mi malfruas. – "Sorry I'm late." For today, yesterday and tomorrow see days and months.
| Esperanto | English |
|---|---|
| Mi alvenis antaŭ du tagoj. | I arrived two days ago. |
| Mi revenos post du tagoj. | I'll be back in two days. |
| la pasintan semajnon / ĉi-jare | last week / this year |
Antaŭ plus a length of time means "ago", post plus a length of time means "in …" (PMEG). The verb ending follows the time word: Hieraŭ mi laboris, hodiaŭ mi laboras, morgaŭ mi laboros. Hieraŭ, hodiaŭ and morgaŭ normally count from the moment of speaking. To count from another day, as in a story, say la antaŭan tagon "the day before" or la sekvan tagon "the next day": Lunde li venis, kaj la sekvan tagon li foriris. – "On Monday he came, and the next day he left."
Je, dum, ĝis, de … ĝis
| Word | Example |
|---|---|
| je "at" | La lernejo komenciĝas je la oka. – "School starts at eight." |
| dum "during, for" | Dum tri horoj ni babilis. – "We chatted for three hours." |
| ĝis "until" | Ni laboras ĝis la sesa. – "We work until six." |
| de … ĝis … | La butiko estas malfermita de la naŭa ĝis la sesa. – "The shop is open from nine to six." |
| -n, no word | Mi dormis ok horojn. – "I slept for eight hours." |
A duration takes either dum or the accusative: dum tri horoj or tri horojn. Ĝis includes its end point: de lundo ĝis vendredo covers Friday. For deadlines, preta ĝis vendredo allows Friday itself, while preta antaŭ vendredo means done before Friday (PMEG). More in prepositions.
Dates
The base pattern is la + ordinal + de + month, with tago "day" left out and no la before the month (see days and months and numbers).
| Esperanto | English |
|---|---|
| Kiun daton ni havas hodiaŭ? | What's the date today? |
| Mi venos la 3-an de Majo. | I'll come on 3 May. |
| Zamenhof naskiĝis la 15-an de Decembro 1859. | Zamenhof was born on 15 December 1859. |
| ĵaŭdon, la 8-an de Oktobro 2026 | Thursday, 8 October 2026 (letter heading) |
| en 1887, la 20-a jarcento, la naŭdekaj jaroj | in 1887, the 20th century, the nineties |
When a date answers "when?", the ordinal takes -n: la 3-an de Majo. In a letter heading both the weekday and the date take -n. Hours are different: je la tria is "at three o'clock", but la trian would mean "on the 3rd of the month", so PMEG advises against -n for hours. PMEG prefers a written month to figures such as 9.3.01, which are read differently in different countries; if you need figures, it recommends the ISO form (1859-12-15).
Age
| Esperanto | English |
|---|---|
| Kiom da jaroj vi havas? / Kiom vi aĝas? / Kiomjara vi estas? | How old are you? |
| Mi havas tridek jarojn. / Mi aĝas tridek jarojn. | I'm thirty. |
| Mi estas tridekjara. | I'm thirty (a thirty-year-old). |
Years of age are a measure, so they take -n; in tridekjara the number and jara join into one adjective. PMEG calls aĝi with a number of years a modern expression; Zamenhof would write havis aĝon de tridek jaroj.
How often
| English | Esperanto | Pronunciation |
|---|---|---|
| always / never | ĉiam / neniam | ĈI-am / ne-NI-am |
| usually | kutime | ku-TI-me |
| often / rarely | ofte / malofte | OF-te / mal-OF-te |
| sometimes | kelkfoje, iafoje | kelk-FO-je, i-a-FO-je |
| every day / week | ĉiutage / ĉiusemajne | ĉi-u-TA-ge / ĉi-u-se-MAJ-ne |
| every month / year | ĉiumonate / ĉiujare | ĉi-u-mo-NA-te / ĉi-u-JA-re |
| once, twice, three times | unufoje, dufoje, trifoje | u-nu-FO-je, du-FO-je, tri-FO-je |
Combine them to say "per": dufoje semajne "twice a week", unufoje monate "once a month". For a weekday habit use lunde "on Mondays" or ĉiun lundon "every Monday". Foje alone has two senses in ReVo, "once, at some time" and "sometimes", so for clarity use iam "once, ever" or kelkfoje, fojfoje "sometimes, now and then".
